Finnish immersion resources

Created: 22/01/2025 - Last updated: 01/09/2025

This is an ongoing list of Finnish media (or media available in Finnish), divided by difficulty level. Don't hesitate to check the advanced section for immersion material even if you're a beginner! The division is a bit arbitrary anyway.

Always keep in mind that it's easier to gravitate towards media that you love - there's no point reading the news in Finnish every day if you hate reading the news, you need to find ways to make it fun and motivating!

Beginner level

This section contains mostly media created for children or Finnish language learners, dubbed / translated versions of popular media, and music in which the lyrics are quite clear.
Note that when it comes to foreign media which has been dubbed in Finnish, the Finnish subtitles very rarely match the audio - the general meaning is the same of course, but with different words used, which can be quite jarring to follow.

Movies

  • Kids movies you already know: some streaming services (especially Disney+) will have many famous kids movies, with Finnish dub and subtitles available

TV shows

  • Moomins:
    • Muumilaakson tarinoita (1990-1992): famous Japanese Moomin anime with 104 episodes, the voice acting is very clear and easy to follow
    • Muumilaakso (2019-): 3D Moomin TV show with 50+ episodes
    • Other moomin media: there are many Moomin TV shows available in Finnish, so if you're done with the two previous ones you can dig in the dedicated wikipedia page to find more
  • Finnish TV shows:
    • Sekasin (2016-): several teenagers with serious mental health problems end up in a psychiatric hospital together. Not for the faint of hearts (cw for suicide attempts, gore, drugs, sexual themes, etc.), its very short episodes make it easy to watch.
  • Popular shows dubbed in Finnish: some streaming services (for instance Netflix) can be set to Finnish even if you live abroad to unlock the dubs of popular series. Note that it's most often youth shows, as adult media in Finland is rarely dubbed.
    • Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld (2024)
    • Arcane (2021-2024)
    • Heartstopper (2022-)
    • Pokemon (1997-)

YouTubers

  • Finnished: created as a learning resource, the host talks in simple puhekieli (spoken Finnish) without slang, and with Finnish & English subtitles
  • Ali Leiniö: Finnish guy speaking quite clearly about nature, camping etc. His videos often have English subtitles.

Podcasts

  • Opi Suomea: some easy every day life subjects spoken in slow and simple Finnish
